We catapulted ourselves headlong into this dream two years ago: it started with a relaxing three month vacation/family visit, evolved into regular lets-move-to-australia conversations, followed by a frenzied property-viewing mission, and before we knew it, we were land owners. Owners of a 12-acre, North-facing block, surrounded by pristine bush: signed; sealed; paid for. Gulp. Here's a photograph:
Chris has a fifteen year old daughter from a previous relationship, which means he is practically and emotionally tied to Sweden until she is ready to fly the nest. And so the move was always destined to be a few years away - yet somehow, two of those precious years slipped silently by us as we rushed about our hectic lives. So, in January this year we set ourselves a deadline: move three years from now. Hence the birth of this blog.
This space will chart our journey over the coming days, weeks, months, years ... as we investigate and plan for our relocation. What kind of home should we build? How much will it cost? Can we participate in the work ourselves? What recycled materials can we incorporate? What energy and water systems should we use? How shall we design the garden? What foods can we grow ourselves? Should we keep any animals? What will we do for work? Where will our daughters go to school; university? And so on... In between all of these questions we'll share a little about Sweden too, as our time here draws to a close.
We're heading on an epic journey ... we hope you'll join us for the ride (it might be a bumpy one!) and share your thoughts and experience with us along the route.
